Why was my WhatsApp template category changed after registration?

After submitting a WhatsApp template via the web interface or API, you may notice that the selected Utility category is changed to Marketing after approval. This is because Meta (WhatsApp) can reclassify templates based on content, even if you selected a different category. This behavior is part of Meta’s automatic review process and applies to all templates.

Why it happens?

Meta automatically reviews and assigns the most appropriate category to your template during or after approval. If your content does not match the Utility category criteria, it may be recategorized as Marketing or another category. This ensures compliance with WhatsApp’s messaging policies and classification standards.

Steps to resolve the issue

1. Check your template’s final category

After approval, confirm the assigned category by checking your template:

– In the web interface: Go to Channels and NumbersChannels WhatsAppTemplates.
– Via API: Use the Get WhatsApp Template endpoint to retrieve template details.

2. Request a review if needed

If you believe the assigned category is incorrect, you can request a review within 60 days of the change.

  • Contact our Support team at [email protected].
  • Provide the template name, your Infobip account ID, and an explanation of why the Utility category is more appropriate

Best practices

Double-check after approval:
Always confirm the final category, even if you selected it during registration.

Monitor regularly:
Categories may be updated later, especially if similar templates are reviewed differently.
